Letting Go: A Transition Plan for ParentsDr. Russ Kinkade
While schools develop transition plans for their special needs students, parents are sometimes ill prepared for the difficult task of letting go. While independence sounds like a good idea, the practical and emotional ramifications are sometimes unexpected and difficult to bear. This presentation will focus on understanding and resolving the internal struggle that parents sometimes experience. We will gain insight into the unique dilemma faced by parents of kids with special needs. We will learn principles that can provide a balanced and strategic process for letting go. |
Sexuality and Adults with Intellectual DisabilityDr. Russ Kinkade The issue of sexuality is challenging enough without the unique complications brought about by intellectual disability. The “perpetual child” stereotype quickly evaporates when one looks objectively and honestly at our humanity and sexuality in the light of disability. This workshop will offer a biblical model for sexuality, applied specifically to people with intellectual disability. Parents will be provided with practical suggestions for assisting their maturing young person as they grapple with the complexities of being a healthy sexual adult in a sexually obsessed world. |
